I have small, girlie hands, which is not too surprising since I am, indeed, a girl. I will get back to this point some other time.
In the months following November 2007, I lived my girlie life. I dropped my girlie heart onto a dirty New York City street, picked it up, dusted it off, and continued with my girlie existence. Most of that December, when I was not drowning my sorrows with shots of cranberry and vodka mix or sobbing hysterically on Niagara‘s cold, corner steps, I could be found barricaded in my bedroom in a cotton tank top, boxer shorts, and mismatched fuzzy socks. I dyed my hair blue-black to mimic my bruised emotions. It was then when I put away the practice book and wrote my first song, “Goodnight Sweet.”
“Goodnight Sweet” is a waltz/lullaby about a breakup. I shall never record it because it may or may not sound too much like Julie Delpy‘s “A Waltz for a Night” from Richard Linklater‘s move Before Sunset (although not exactly because my little girlie hands still weren’t good enough to make her chords at the time). Nevertheless, I kept practicing. When I was able to play three chords (C, G, and G7), I wrote my second song, “The Story of My Life.” Of course, “The Story of My Life” is not so much the entire story of my comprehensive life (that would be an enormous undertaking for which I am obviously still not prepared) as it is a sarcastic response to how people define relationships.
After a craptacular December and a henna hair makeover, 2008 was looking to be a beneficial year which, pun intended, is a story for another time.
